Miriam is an Irish-Polish flautist and freelance photographer. Curious about a variety of styles, she equally enjoys performing with modern orchestras, early music ensembles and contemporary groups, as well as capturing other artists and their creative endeavours through the lens.
As a teenager she obsessively documented her surroundings and bittersweet coming-of-age experiences on film. College time brought on first portraiture and concept photography ventures. This organic entry-way, combined with expertise gathered over the years and a deep passion for bringing the beauty of the human experience to light, resonates in her natural, comprehensive approach to photographing people, places and events.
Miriam has appeared at major concert halls around Europe, on CD recordings for Sony Classical, Outhere Music and New Amsterdam Records as well as multiple broadcasts on ORF and RTÉ radio. As guest principal she has worked with the Irish Chamber Orchestra, Tonkünstler Orchester, RTÉ Concert Orchestra, Münchner Kammerorchester, Haydn Philharmonie, Irish National Opera and the Ulster Orchestra. She performed at numerous festivals around Ireland in all kinds of chamber music settings and, among others, in a duo with pianist Ellen Jansson.
Miriam has featured as soloist in flute concerti by Liebermann, Ibert, Nielsen, Mozart, Telemann and Vivaldi. A former member of the experimental new music group, Kirkos Ensemble, she has brought contemporary Irish music to audiences at home, in the UK, New York and Beijing and guested with the Crash Ensemble on several occassions. Miriam was the Irish Freemasons' Young Musician of the Year 2015, inaugural recipient of the RDS Jago Award, won several prizes in the ESB Feis Ceoil as a young student flautist and was a recipient of the Business to Arts Tile Style Bursary 2021 for both her musical and photographic development.
Having been fascinated with early music for as long as she can remember, she taught herself the traverso for three years before receiving an Arts Council Travel and Training Award which enabled her to take lessons in London. She now plays with the Irish Baroque Orchestra, is a participant of the Balthasar-Neumann Orchestra NOVA scheme and has fond memories performing with Arcangelo, Dresdner Barockorchester, Ex Cathedra, Camerata Kilkenny, Ensemble Marsyas, Collegium Marianum, Ensemble Pallidor and the Geminiani Ensemble. She has worked on Bach Cantata projects directed by Philippe Herreweghe and Mark Padmore and performed alongside baroque flautists Wilbert Hazelzet, Rachel Brown and Jana Semeradova. A dedicated teacher, she has been involved with a number of educational and outreach projects in Ireland and the UK for the past 8 years, is a tutor for the Irish Youth Baroque Orchestra and occasionally leads classes at the Royal Irish Academy of Music.
Miriam graduated from the Royal Irish Academy of Music as a pupil of William Dowdall and Patricia Morris, followed by a Master's Degree at Kunstuniversität Graz with Erwin Klambauer and Peter Verhoyen. Among her other influential teachers were Michael Cox, Lisa Beznosiuk and Rachel Brown, as well as memorable masterclass encounters with William Bennett, Peter-Lukas Graf, Sir James Galway, Lorna McGhee, Claire Guimond, Andras Adorjan and Felix Renggli. She was a Britten-Pears Young Artist, member of the Grafenegg Academy and a scholarship participant of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra Institute in Toronto.
Miriam is grateful for the support of the Music Network funded by the Arts Council and the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, the RDS, RTE lyric fm, Flax Trust, South Dublin County Council, RIAM, Halpin & Jago families and the ever-supportive Bill Dowdall.
